Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who have trespassed against us.
How many times should we forgive? 7 times 7? That was Peter’s question to Jesus that we find in Matthew 18: 21-22. Jesus’ reply was not 7 times 7 but 70 times 7. That’s a lot. We all have people in our lives who have hurt us–probably many times. I’m sure each of us can name at least several. It is hard to forgive–let alone over and over. Yet Jesus calls us to forgive, offer mercy, and reconcile.
In the Lord’s Prayer, we find the way forward to forgive. We are reminded that each of us and all of us have turned away from God, put ourselves first, and have not loved. We’ve all missed the mark of loving. We all need forgiveness. The good news is that God forgives us–over and over. In living as loved and forgiven people, we are nurtured and empowered to forgive and love others. Let’s take the first step.
Come be with us Sunday as seek to live and pray more like Jesus.
Grace and peace,
