Next week I will be in Kansas City for a very important meeting. Clergy and laity from throughout The United Methodist Church will gather at Church of the Resurrection (pastored by Adam Hamilton) to discuss the future of the denomination. We have just passed the deadline to send in proposed legislation to be considered at the next General Conference in May in Minneapolis. In Kansas City, moderate and progressive UMs will discuss which legislative proposals we might want to endorse.
No one knows what the future of The UMC might look like. I do know that the vast majority of UMs in the United States are steadfast in their conviction that the Traditional Plan passed last February will not stand. I have no doubt that some form of division within the church will take place. How much unity we might still be able to accommodate is uncertain.
Please be in prayer for The United Methodist Church. The Holy Spirit seems to be birthing something new in the way Methodism is structured. Until we can determine what this new form will look like it is easy to get anxious or pessimistic. Know that we are held in God’s arms and that ultimately God’s dream for the Methodist church will be fulfilled. We are on the precipice of a new and exciting era in our history!
